Law enforcement officers begin another Special Traffic Enforcement Program today
that will run through August 31st.    "Over the Limit, Under Arrest" will encourage
drivers to buckle up..with emphasis upon drunk or impaired drivers.  Alcohol-related
deaths have increased for three straight years..with 111 deaths in 2007.

Alliant Energy on Friday afternoon broke ground for a new $1 million dollar training and
technical center.  Construction for the two buildings will begin in September with completion
in March 2009.  The facility will be training 100 apprentices once opened.

The Iowa State Fair has drawn over 1 million visitors once again.  Saturday attracted
116,774 visitors, the highest Saturday total since 121,628 attended in 1999.  Sunday
attendence figures were not available.  The 2009 State Fair, "STATE FAIR TIME', will
be August 13th to the 23rd.

JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP) - More Iowa soldiers are getting ready for
duty in Afghanistan. A sendoff ceremony is today at Camp Dodge in
Johnston for about 20 Iowa National Guard soldiers from various
units across the state. The soldiers will be sent to Fort Riley,
Kansas, before reporting to Afghanistan.
 
     CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - It's back to the basics as students
deal with flood damaged schools as classes resume in Iowa. State
education officials say about 2,500 students have been displaced by
this year's disasters. Three districts have schools that won't open
-- Cedar Rapids, Aplington-Parkersburg and Waverly-Shell Rock.
 
     DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - An investigation is under way in to a
shooting in Des Moines that injured a 6-year-old boy. The shooting
happened yesterday afternoon on the city's southeast side. No other
details have been released.
 
     SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - A judge has scheduled a hearing this
week on all motions pending in the case against a Sioux City man
accused of killing his two stepdaughters last January. Lawrence
Harris Sr. is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

  DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - With winter still being months away,
some Iowa cities and counties are already worrying they won't have
enough road salt for next winter. The Iowa Department of
Transportation is reporting far tighter supplies than usual heading
into fall.
 
     POSTVILLE, Iowa (AP) - Three months after the nation's largest
immigration raid, chickens and beef carcasses are again moving down
the line at Agriprocessors' kosher meatpacking plant in Postville.
But managers say business isn't back to normal and the plant is
operating at about half capacity.
 
     CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - More buildings in downtown Cedar
Rapids that have been closed since the June floods are expected to
begin reopening to workers this week. Several building managers say
they will begin allowing tenants to return to the upper floors of
buildings starting Monday and Tuesday.
 
     NEWTON, Iowa (AP) - Trial for a man charged in the fatal
stabbing of a Newton man has been moved to Dallas County. Justin
Robuck is charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Jerry
Pittman III.
