Friday, Alliant Energy broke ground for a new training center the company will use
to train employees. The new one-million dollar facility will replace a 30 year old
center located on Quarry Road. President Tom Aller told the attendees the new
facility will be two buildings...an 8 thousand plus square foot facility incorporating
the latest technology for training..and a 4 thousand foot building that will be a garage,
welding training are and storage. Construction is scheduled to begin in September
with completion by March 2009. 100 apprentices a year will use the facility.
Attendence at the Iowa State Fair continues strong..with over 754 thousand visitors
through Thursday. The record attendence was set in 2004. 2008 attendence
continues to run ahead of 2007's attendence.
Marshalltown Police Chief Lon Walker will be departing Marshalltown on September
14th and then head to Ft Jackson South Carolina for two weeks of training before
departing for Manheim, Germany where he will be Chief of Army Law Enforcement
for Europe. A farewell reception is scheduled for September 10th from 3 to 5 PM
at the Fisher Community Center.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa's seasonally adjusted unemployment
rate jumped to 4.3 percent in July, the highest level since August
2005. Officials blame the increase on business disruptions caused
by June's flooding and a slowdown in housing construction.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Governor Culver has asked the U.S.
Agriculture Secretary for a Secretarial Disaster Designation for 82
of Iowa's 99 counties. Culver wants federal help for damage to
crops and production losses caused by flooding, severe storms and
tornadoes in Iowa this year.
CRESTON, Iowa (AP) - James Christensen, Creston's former police
chief, is scheduled to have an employment termination hearing in
front of the City Council next week. Christensen and former
assistant chief John Sickels are charged with second degree sexual
abuse. Their trial is scheduled for November 17th.
JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa Army National Guard says a
sendoff ceremony will be held for on Monday at Camp Dodge for about
20 soldiers who will serve in Afghanistan. The public is invited to
attend. Officials say the mobilization of the soldiers is part of
Operation Enduring Freedom and the Global War on Terrorism.
