 BEIJING (AP) - Michael Phelps won his seventh gold medal at the
Beijing Olympics in dramatic fashion. The man dubbed "Super Fish"
by local reporters had to extend his arm with a final lunge to nose
out Serbia's Milorad Cavic (KA'-vich) to win the 100 meter
butterfly by a mere one-hundreth of a second. He goes for his
eighth and final gold tomorrow when the favored U.S. 400 medley
relay team hits the pool.
 
     BEIJING (AP) - Vincent Hancock of the U.S. won the gold medal in
the men's skeet competition. He had to survive a four-target
shootout with a Norwegian, who missed one of his final two shots
while Hancock hit his.
 
     BEIJING (AP) - The U.S. has won a medal in sculls. Michelle
Guerette (gur-EHT') was in fifth place at the midway mark of the
competition but won the silver with a strong finish.
 
     BEIJING (AP) - With their coach watching from the bench, the
U.S. men's volleyball team beat China today 25-22, 25-12, 25-18.
The game marked the return of coach Hugh McCutcheon, who has been
away from the team since the murder of his father-in-law earlier in
the month by a Chinese man in Beijing.
 
     BEIJING (AP) - The U.S. men's basketball team is back in action
tonight. The Americans, who are unbeaten in three games, are facing
3-and-0 world champion Spain.

  HOUSTON (AP) - Brandon Webb is the major leagues' first 18-game
winner and the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped Houston Astros'
eight-game winning streak, 12-2 as Chris Snyder drove in four runs.
Webb is 18-and-4 by allowing four hits and retiring 16 Astros on
groundouts to win his seventh straight decision.
 
     CLEVELAND (AP) - Cliff Lee became the AL's first 17-game winner
by pitching his third complete game of the season, leading the
Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. The
Angels scored 48 runs in their last six games but could muster just
eight hits and two runs against Lee, who is 17-and-2.
 
     BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) - Brian Vickers will be the pole-sitter for
Sunday's NASCAR 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International
Speedway. Jimmie Johnson, Elliott Sadler, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and
Jeff Gordon round out the top five qualifiers.
