Iowan Shawn Johnson persevered and finally reached her goal of a gold
medal. Shawn's score of 16.225 topped the competition. Teammate
Nastia Luikin finished second to take a silver..with China's Cheng Fei
taking the bronze. Johnson's Olympics medal count is one gold and
three silver. Luikin obtained a gold, three silver and bronze.
The Marshalltown Sidewalk Committee presented its priority list for
sidewalk installation in the City to the Council Committee of the Whole
Monday evening. Several areas have been identified as priorities, with
the cost of the sidewalks coming from TIF funding. The information
outlines areas to be included in a 5 year plan that could use the $50,000
per year the city has allocated to sidewalk repair and improvements.
The Council will be reviewing the report before taking any action.
The City Council also discussed improving a city owned parking lot,
between South second and West Church. Cost estimates are approximately
300,000 dollars.

across Iowa. Officials blame a surge in food and fuel costs.
Administrators say they'll look for ways to cut expenses and reduce
waste, but they may have to raise prices again before the school
year is over.

who accidentally shot himself on Sunday has told authorities where
to find the gun. Officials say Jordan Rissman help solve the
mystery after he was taken off a ventilator and was able to talk.
ORANGE CITY, Iowa (AP) - An Orange City man faces ten counts of
first-degree arson after a fire in an apartment in the northwest
Iowa town. Authorities say Paul Johnson is accused in the fire that
broke out yesterday morning. Ten people who were in the building
escaped.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - State investigators claim a company
disguised E85 ethanol fuel as unleaded gasoline or 10-percent
ethanol-blended fuel and sold the fuel at stations in Sumner and
Fairbank. The Iowa attorney general's office filed a
consumer-protection lawsuit in Black Hawk County District Court
against Jerry Fratzke, who owns Pronto Market stations in Sumner
and Fairbank. The suit ordered Fratzke to immediately stop selling
E85.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A 6-year-old boy that Des Moines police
say accidentally shot himself is in serious condition. Police
spokesman Sgt. Vince Valdez says the boy, identified as Jordan
Rissman, found a gun in the house Sunday and was playing with it
when it went off. It hit the child near near the shoulder.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Key lawmakers say the chances for a
special legislative session to deal with flooding issues is no
better than 50-50. A special session wouldn't be held until
mid-September, after a panel appointed by Gov. Chet Culver issues
its recommendations for flood relief legislation.

Redlawsk has a long history of political activism. But one thing
he's never done is attend the Democratic National Convention. Now
that he's secured a ticket, he's aiming to take his students with
