BEIJING (AP) - Shawn Johnson finally got her Olympic gold medal
in the last event of the women's competition Tuesday night, the
balance beam.
Johnson nailed her routine that is chock-full of difficult
tricks, earning a 16.225. Her grin was a thousand times wider than
the 4-inch-wide beam she had just conquered.
The world champion, who already had a silver behind fellow
American Nastia Liukin in the all-around, and a silver on floor and
in the team event, edged Liukin, who finished with a gold, three
silvers and a bronze.
Cheng Fei of China took the bronze, giving China six women's
medals, two behind the U.S.

TRIATHLON-WEST DES MOINES
Hy-Vee Triathlon to stay in West Des Moines
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The Hy-Vee Triathlon will remain in West
Des Moines next year.
Hy-Vee officials say the move should alleviate concerns over
flooding, which forced officials to move the event from Des Moines
in June.
The 2007 event began at Gray's Lake in Des Moines and finished
near the State Capitol. Flooding left organizers scrambling to find
a new venue for this year's event, and it was moved to West Des
Moines.
Hy-Vee spokeswoman Chris Friesleben says the 2009 event will
start and finish at Raccoon River in West Des Moines. Company
officials believe the probability of flooding in Raccoon River Park
is smaller than at some of the sites they were considering.
Hy-Vee is based in West Des Moines.
S DAKOTA STATE FOOTBALL
SDSU prepares for Iowa State
BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) - The move to NCAA Division I athletics
officially arrives for South Dakota State University on September
1st.
For football coach John Stiegelmeier, the "big time" comes
three days sooner when the Jackrabbits open the season at Iowa
State. It's a game that's been talked about for months.
Stiegelmeier says his team normally talks about a game three or
four days before we play it. He says the extra talk about Iowa
State is because the Jackrabbits need that focus.
SDSU is a new member of the nine-team Missouri Valley Football
Conference. The Jackrabbits will be eligible for the NCAA
postseason, either by earning an automatic berth as league champion
or as an at-large selection to the Football Championship
Subdivision.
