DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A new proposed spending plan for Des Moines Public Schools would cut an unprecedented $33 million from next year's district budget and eliminate nearly 350 teaching positions. The school board will not formally adopt the budget until after the state approves its final school aid package.
WASHINGTON, Iowa (AP) - Court authorities say a 70-year-old Washington man has entered a plea of not guilty in his wife's January death. James Blum entered the written plea yesterday at his
arraignment in Washington County. Investigators say Blum smothered his 67-year-old wife, Patricia, on a couch in their home.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A dental-only program for underinsured children has been launched in Iowa. The program, started by the state human services department, is available for children whose family income qualifies them for the Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa program and whose health insurance doesn't include dental care.
