Emergency starter Trevor Cahill combined with four relievers on a three-hitter as the Chicago Cubs ended a two-game skid, 4-0 over the Brewers in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader. Cahill scattered two hits in five scoreless innings after starting in place of John Lackey, who was scratched due to a sore shoulder. The Cubs’ managed just six hits and scored their runs on a pair of sacrifice flies, a squeeze bunt by Cahill and a wild pitch.
The Cubbies completed the twinbill sweep as Jason Hammel threw two-hit ball over seven scoreless innings to lead a 4-1 triumph. Javier Baez smacked a two-run homer as the Cubs won for the 13th time in 15 games to improve to a major league-best 75-43. The Brewers mustered only nine hits in the doubleheader and didn’t score until Hernandez Perez homered with two out in the ninth inning of the nightcap.
