Cole Custer won the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Quaker State 400 in a mad dash on the last lap to become the first rookie winner in nearly four years. The 22-year-old took the lead on the final lap to earn his first NASCAR Cup Series win in his 20th career start after a late restart at Kentucky Speedway.
With the victory, Custer will have a spot in the All-Star race on Wednesday.
Martin Truex Jr. finished second in Sunday’s race. Matt DiBenedetto took third, and Kevin Harvick came in fourth.
Custer got a push from DiBenedetto on the outside down the backstretch, surging past Truex and Harvick, who were battling for the lead on the final restart. The move made Custer the first rookie Cup Series winner since Chris Buescher took the checkered flag at Pocono on Aug. 1, 2016.
The Cup Series heads to Texas Motor Speedway for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 on Sunday, July 19. Before that, the Cup Series will host its All-Star festivities at Bristol Motor Speedway on Wednesday, July 15.
