Currently, open burning is prohibited in the City of Marshalltown per City Ordinance. With input provided by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the “green” condition of the wood causes more smoke than dry wood. Additionally, we are beginning to receive complaints of smoke from burning tree waste. With so many residents still without power and needing to leave windows open for cooling purposes, smoke is entering homes and making it difficult for many to breath. As such, a burn ban is being implemented effective 08-12-2020 at 12:00 pm. A similar ban was put into place in 2018 after the tornado. The City of Marshalltown is beginning debris cleanup from the curbs today and has made a request to the State of Iowa for assistance to handle the large amount of tree debris.
