The initial numbers from the 2020 census show few surprises when it comes to the population of the Hawkeye State.
It grew in pockets around the state’s largest cities over the past decade while 68 counties in rural areas lost population, according to U.S. Census data.
The fastest-growing area in the state remained Dallas County, west of Des Moines, which grew 50.7% in the past decade to a population of 99,678 in 2020 from just over 66,000 in 2010.
The Iowa capital Dispatch reports that Marshall County has the third-lowest percentage of white residents at 73.8 percent, one of 11 counties where whites made up less than 80 percent of the population. The numbers show Marshall county had the third-highest percentage of Hispanic or Latino residents with just under 23 percent.
Overall, the population of Iowa rose 4.7 percent between 2010 and 2020.
