A Garwin woman who pleaded guilty last year to stealing funds from the Green Mountain-Garwin Booster Club has been sentenced to five years probation.
Thirty-five-year-old Johna Smith was sentenced Thursday in Tama County District Court.
Smith was arrested in September of 2021 following an initial investigation into the incident by the Tama County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation revealed that Smith allegedly stole more than $4,500 from the GMG district Parent’s Association, also known as the GMG Booster Club.
According to court records, Smith served as treasurer of the club and was in possession of a club debit card when the transactions in question were made in July and August of 2021.
During Thursday’s sentencing hearing, Smith was ordered to serve five years in prison by District Court Judge Chad Kepros. However, the sentence was suspended and Smith was placed on probation with the Iowa Department of Correctional Services for a period of five years. Smith was further ordered to pay victim restitution for damages incurred in the case.
