At Monday’s meeting, the Marshalltown City Council heard from City Police Chief Mike Tupper about the need for offering a special hiring incentive for non-certified police officer applicants as a means of better enhancing overall recruitment efforts for the local police force.
According to Chief Tupper, the Marshalltown Police Department is among a growing number of law enforcement agencies across the nation which has been dealing with a known shortage of officers on the force, which raises concerns for the future.
The Marshalltown City Council concurred with the idea of enacting a resolution for consideration at its next regular meting that would allow for a $2,000 hiring bonus to be granted to all non-certified Marshalltown police officer applicants.
At Monday’s meeting, a resolution was adopted supporting future grant applications by the city for the State Street reconstruction project.
Another resolution was passed by the council setting a March 14th hearing date for the city’s June 2023 Fiscal Year-End Budget.
The council also passed a separate resolution setting a March 14th hearing date on the city’s five-year capital improvement program.
At Monday’s meeting, the council also approved an ordinance amending the established boundaries of election wards and precincts within the city of Marshalltown, repealing conflicting ordinances that has previously existed.
