The Ames Fire Department is credited with rescuing a cat from a house fire which broke out within the Ames city limits late Monday night.

At around 11:20 p.m., Ames fire crews were called to a home located at 417 12th Street.

A passerby reported seeing flames coming from inside the home through a window and called 9-1-1.

Fire crews made entry into the home to search for occupants and extinguished the fire.

During their search, a cat was found and safely removed from the fire.  No other occupants were at home at the time of the fire.

Ames fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and contain the fire to its initial point of origin.

The cat was treated at the scene with oxygen and transported by Ames police to the Iowa State University Small Animal Hospital for observation.

Smoke damage was reported throughout the entire home with heat and fire damage being confined to the area where the fire originated.

The cause of he fire remains under investigation.
