Strong winds on Thursday proved to be too much for a traffic signal overhanging a busy street intersection in the city of Ames.

According to Ames city officials, the steel traffic signal broke off near its base and crashed to the ground below. The incident happened at the intersection of 11th Street and Duff Avenue, which is s popular pedestrian intersection in the community.

Fortunately, no one was injured, but some passing motorists, needless to say, were somewhat startled by the incident.

Ames public works crews worked to remove the signal in a timely manner.

The city announced that a temporary signal is expected to be in place later today.
