A man charged with killing an Iowa State Trooper who entered his Grundy Center home during an armed standoff has filed notice that he intends to plead self defense.

Michael Lang of Grundy Center is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Iow State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith.

Police say a fight during a traffic stop led to a shootout inside Lang’s home.

A pre-trial conference in the case is set for Monday, Apr. 2nd.

The trial will commence on May 9th at 9:00 a.m. at the Hamilton County Courthouse in Webster City.
