The Marshalltown City Council awarded contracts for two notable improvement projects for the community at Monday night’s meeting.

A contract was awarded to Comstruct Construction Incorporated for the State Street Reconstruction Project, which is slated to begin during the year 2023.

The council also approved a contract with Municipal Pipe and Tool Corporation for the 2020 Sanitary Sewer CIPP Project, which will encompass a wide area of the community.

At Monday’s meeting, the council also approved a development agreement with Simms Company LLC for a $250,000 Catalyst Building Remediation Grant for the creation of Upper Story Housing within the Marshalltown Central Business District.

Marshalltown Fire Chief Dave Rierson discussed some of the ongoing challenges the department is facing in regard to overlapping service calls. The issue was first brought before the council as part of the department’s annual report back in April. When questioned about the best way of dealing with the issue, Rierson noted the best solution from a department standpoint would be to consider adding additional staff per individual shift. Rierson further indicated the need for having additional discussion to better outline the best course of action for handling the situation over the long term.
