A Grundy Center man who was recently found guilty of murdering an Iowa State Trooper has requested a new trial.

The defense attorney for Michael Lang claims that there was not enough evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that Lang actually meant or planned to kill Smith during his trial.

A judge is set to hear his request on June 27th.

An initial investigation revealed that Smith was killed by Lang after he entered Lang’s Grundy Center home during a standoff in April of 2021.
