Beginning July 1st, the City of Marshalltown will have a new city attorney to handle the city’s future legal issues.

On Monday, the Marshalltown City Council said farewell to Roger Schoell, who has served as the city’s legal counsel since 2014.  In recent months, the City of Marshalltown has been looking at ways of better reducing its overall operating expenses, including its current legal budget according to Schoell.

At Monday’s meeting, the council approved for Steven Leidinger of Lynch Dallas Corporation to serve as the city’s new attorney, beginning next month.

It was recommended that Leidinger be allowed to attend future council meetings virtually when possible with the city to pay any required fees for closed session proceedings in cases where legal issues may be involved.

Rachel Buchanan, Executive Director of the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown, was on hand to discuss the contract agreement which has been in place between the shelter an the city for carrying out sheltered animal care services.  The council later approved drafting a new form of contract with the animal shelter which will be presented for final adoption at a future meeting.

Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper discussed the need for having an automated traffic enforcement system in place as a means of better dealing with ongoing speed issues within the community.  Chief Tupper discussed the idea of forming a committee to further address the issue with a recommendation from the committee to later be brought before the council for definitive action.

The council also held continuing discussion last night on a resolution allowing for the establishment of a city-wide compost fee.  After much debate, the council voted to table a resolution formally adopting the fee until its July 11th meeting.  A residential service charge of $1.50 would be applied to local customers water works bills under the current recommended guidelines.
