In its first semester as a sanctioned sport, the Marshalltown Community College E-Sports team has already produced its first national champion!  Amber Lawthers, a sophomore at MCC and a 2019 Marshalltown High School graduate, has been dominating a video game all semester called Mario Kart 8 DX.  Over this past weekend Amber was able to win her first National Championship in Mario Kart.  She was undefeated heading into the tournament and after a few bumps in the semi finals, she was able to sweep the Championship round 4-0, beating a player form Missouri State University – West Plains.  Lawthers initially thought the E-Sports team would just be Overwatch and Rainbow 6, but once she heard about Mario Kart, she knew she was in.  MCC Esports Coach Nate Rodemeyer says, it was her own drive and determination which propelled her into the top spot.
