Marshalltown Superintendent asked the school board for approval on Full-Time teaching positions sign on incentive.  Dr. Schutte thinks the bonus is a good hiring/recruitment tool to find quality teachers.  This bonus would be for teachers who need to get a special certification/endorsement beyond their teaching degree, like special education.

That was school board member Leah Stanley, who was the only person to vote not in favor of the bonuses.  Part of the issue, and Leah mentions it again later, is that there is a teacher shortage. It was also discussed about teachers who currently work for the district, if they are eligible for the bonus, and Dr. Schutte covers that

The $5000 bonus, a reimbursement of moving expenses, and a competitive salary is what the Marshalltown Community School District is using to attract more teachers to the area.
