The last agenda item at the Marshalltown City Council meeting sparked the biggest controversy. The City talked about potentially raising property tax levy to no higher than $16.00. Currently the property tax levy is calculated at $15.49 and originally, they predicted $15.36, which has been the levy since 2020. There is property tax relief, if given to the tax payers, would keep the levy at $15.36 but would use all the relief the city has.
That was Councilor Gary Thompson. Councilor Gabe Isom also shared his thoughts
Gabe suggested a small increase each year that the public would be aware of over the spuratic changes they can sometimes bring. Gabe suggested to raise the levy no higher than $16/$1000. This was approved and will be discussed further at future meetings.
