Last night a crowed gathered at the Elmwood Country Club to celebrate the Boy Scouts of America and long-time supporter Tom Apgar. Tom was awarded with the North Star Award, one of the highest honors a volunteer can receive in scouting. When Apgar took the podium, he talked about how this award was not for him, but an award for the whole Apgar family. Apgar earned his Eagle Scout award all the way back in 1969 and spent multiple summers camping at Camp Mitigwa, just south of Boone. The event last night highlighted all the great things scouting has done in the 27 counties Mid-Iowa covers. Apgar was able to make a sizable donation for a new pavilion at Camp Mitigwa, which is next to the trading post. The Apgar Pavilion is used by scouters who just go a treat from the trading post, scouts earning merit badges, or scouts playing games in their free time.
