The Marshalltown Mall is seeing dark days as the lights are now turned off inside and outside in the parking lot. Many people have wondered why that is, it is because the ownership group of the mall, New York-based Kohan retail Investment Group, has not paid the utilities bill. Those businesses that have an outside door can continue to operate as the individual businesses pay their own bills and are not delinquent. One business, Oliver Beene, does not have an outside entrance and announced on their Facebook page this weekend they would be closed. This is coming from the Fire Marshal for safety reasons. The New York-based Kohan Retail Investment Group, owns multiple malls in Iowa but has an interesting history as they were sued for not paying property tax in Mason City back in 2018, they sold the mall there in 2022. Another mall they own in Tulsa Oklahoma, and that closed permanently due to ongoing fire code violations. Both of these, along with many others, can be found on the Kohen Retail Investment Group Wikipedia page, with further resources linked at the bottom of the page from media outlets.
