The Marshalltown City Council had more trash talk last night as there was an ordinance discussed and voted on about new code regulations around garbage pickup. Heather Thomas, Public Works Director, talks through how they got to the newest ordinance.
This meeting was prompted because one garbage hauler got a new truck where the trash receptacles will need to be next to the road, against city ordinance. Thomas explains what the haulers and city were able to agree on.
Other changes included adding the ability to do a 1-time pickup for large items. Individuals can set up large pickups with their haulers. The other big change is that any new licensed haulers will need to turn an application into the city council. Councilmen Gary Thompson was concerned that this was not a big enough change to be voted on again and requested the city attorney to review. Thompson suggested waiting for the new council to take over at the beginning of the calendar year.
