Tuesday, March 5th will be a special election for LOST and PPEL. LOST is Local Option Sales Tax, and it is an extra 1% that is collected on items sold in Marshalltown. Anyone who visits and purchases something in town contributes to this tax. Typically, people think a total of 7% sales tax
That is Marshalltown City Councilor Greg Nichols, he goes on to mention that Marshalltown previously split the percentage at 78% for property tax relief and 22% for Council Designated Fund. That Council Designated Fund is helpful when things pop up throughout the year that isn’t planned for.
The election on March 5th, a vote for yes would move the percentages to 75% and 25% a no vote will bring new percentages back to the ballot in the fall.
