This past week, Governor Kim Reynolds signed a law that would let school boards vote to allow teachers and staff to carry a gun on school grounds.  Marshall County Sheriff Joel Phillips further explains how this law would work.  If school employees wanted to carry a gun on campus, they would need to take a training.

Beyond the training the applicant would have to be approved by the county sheriffs office.  Applicants would need to pass a background check each year.

Sheriff Phillips mentions how this new law may affect response time, as many of these shooting events in schools happen in 5 – 7 minutes.

This new law will be something that schools can begin discussing now.  According to lawmakers working on the bill roughly 20 school districts statewide are looking to arm their staff.
