Monday afternoon around 4:30, the Marshalltown Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the 2900 block of Cooper Lane in Marshalltown. Firefighters were told that the fire was in the garage and the homeowner was using a fire extinguisher to suppress the flames. Firefighters deployed 2 lines for attack and were able to suppress majority of the fire and then moved to check inside the house. None of the flames extended from the garage to the house or attic space. After investigation they found the fire was caused by a mechanical malfunction in the engine compartment of the homeowners’ vehicle. The Marshalltown fire department was on location for about an hour. The homeowners are temporarily displaced due to smoke damage.
