This weekend is the annual free fishing weekend in the state of Iowa. We spoke with Emily Herring, the Conservation Director here in Marshalltown as to what that means for those who want to fish this weekend.

Normally, everyone who is over the age of 16 must have a fishing license to fish, and Herring says that is still the case with the exception of this weekend.

Herring says that people wanting a fishing license have many different ways to do that if they want to continue fishing over the rest of the year. They can do it at Walmart, Thiessens, or online, and the DNR has an app called GoOutdoorsIA so people can have their license on their phone rather than carrying around their paper copy.

Herring caps it off by listing some places people can spend this free fishing weekend.

This weekend is a great opportunity to try out fishing if you aren’t sold on it yet, or if you just want to have a fun time fishing with your friends and family without committing to a license.
