Even though it was nearly 60 over the weekend, Winter is just around the corner and set to start in less than 2 weeks. Some people may have already busted out those space heaters in their homes. Marshalltown Fire Chief Christopher Cross wants people to be warm and cozy, but also safe.

He says a general rule is that if you are leaving a room with a space heater, turn it off. He says there is a specific name or listing people should look for when purchasing a space heater.

That UL distinction should be on the outside of the box or packaging.  Most new space heaters will have a tip switch

Using the space heater correctly and following these tips will drastically cut down the potential of causing a fire while using a Space Heater. Stay warm, but stay safe.
