The Iowa Senate has introduced Senate File 310, which would allow developers to build a housing unit without a sprinkler fire suppression system as long as the building has less than 8 units. Marshalltown Fire Marshal, Josh Warnell, is also the Vice President of the Iowa Fire Marshal’s Association and they released a statement opposing this bill.
Warnell says many municipalities will adopt their code from the state’s language. He says the way it is written can leave a lot of room for interpretation.
He says that the sprinkler system gives people a better chance to get out of the building if there is a fire.
Senate File 310 was approved by a senate committee on February 13th.
