There have been 6 cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, or Bird Flu, found in flocks in Iowa since the beginning of 2025. When the Bird Flu hits a commercial flock, the entire flock needs to be euthanized. Farmers can tell almost immediately if their flock has been affected.
That is Iowa State Extension Poultry Expert, Yuko Sato. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has asked poultry producers to enhance their biosecurity measures. Sato says biosecurity is keeping the outside out and the inside in.
Sato was asked about egg prices and if the bird flu is to blame for the rising prices
She then talks about the percentage of birds euthanized due to the bird flu since 2022
Sato will be the guest for Central Iowa Today, this afternoon at 12:45 right here on KFJB.
