Towards the end of the Marshalltown City Council meeting, one of the discussion items on the agenda was “Property Maintenance Code Enforcement”. Housing and Community Development Assistant Director, Clayton Ender, has been working to find properties not up to code with the City’s Adoptive Property Maintenance Code.

He says it is not about aesthetics, but about the elements of the structure itself.

Ender says he started with google images and street view to start going through all the neighborhoods. He then had a list of homes to be checked over by the 2 compliance officers. They then took photos of the homes and issues to confirm what they were seeing online through google street view.

Many of the properties on his map are on the northside of town, and Ender acknowledges that many of these homes were damaged by the tornado and derecho. He says April 1st notices will go out to fix these Property Maintenance issues.

These fines can occur daily which will quickly add up for people who are not up to code. Ender wants people to work with him and he is willing to talk with anyone about their property status. If you have any questions you can reach out to the Housing and Development department within the city.
