A bill being discussed in the Iowa Legislature would put more restrictions on using a cell phone or smart phone while driving. Current law allows drivers to use a smart phone as a GPS devise. The legislature is now discussing removing any exceptions and drivers would not be allowed to use a smart phone unless it was with hands free technology. Detective Stephen Sheets with the Marshalltown Police Department shares what he tells officers when they need to use their phone while on patrol.

Detective Sheets says that advice is for anyone out on the roads. He says it does not take long for your surroundings to change.

The Senate voted 47 – 1 last week to ban cellphones while driving unless it is in hands free mode. A similar bill has stalled the house in previous years
