The City of Marshalltown, the Police Department, and the Animal Rescue League of Marshall County are urging the public to promote responsible pet ownership following a sharp rise in calls about dogs running loose. From October 2023 to October 2024, officers responded to 670 reports of animals at large, up from 470 the previous year and 406 the year before.

Pet owners are reminded of Marshalltown’s city ordinances, which prohibit dogs from running at large. Repeat offenders face penalties, including mandatory spaying/neutering, forfeiture of the dog, and fines starting at $105, which could exceed $180 with court costs.

Pet owners must also ensure vaccinations are up-to-date, particularly for rabies. Pets without proof of vaccination may be impounded, and owners will incur additional fees before their release.

The community is encouraged to report animals at large by calling 641-754-5725.
