The Marshalltown Mall has been going through issues since November of 2023 when it became public that the Mall was not paying their utilities bill. This has caused multiple businesses to leave the mall and find other locations in town. The city brought a lawsuit against the mall for code violations totaling $6,500, the maximum fine in small claims court.

That is Marshalltown Mayor Joel Greer, who is a lawyer by trade. A potential new owner had put an offer on the mall, but there was 1 hangup with the sale.

Due to the sale, the city then dropped the lawsuit so the sale could be finalized.

While Mayor Greer is not optimistic about collecting on the fines after court, he has not ruled out taking them to court after the sale has finalized. According to social media posts, the new owners have begun communication with current tenets.
