With the weather fluctuating between super cold and above freezing it is a good time to check in on ice thickness. According to the Iowa DNR, if ice is less than 2inches thick, they advise to stay off.
To go out ice fishing, the DNR suggests at least 4inches of ice. To take a snowmobile or ATV on the ice, they recommend 5inches of ice. To get a small pickup or car on ice, recommendation is to have at least 8 to 12 inches of ice, then for a medium truck that grows to 15 inches of ice.
Iowa DNR puts out an ice report weekly with their fishing report at iowadnr.gov
