Governor Kim Reynolds said before the Legislative Session started that she wants to have a statewide cell phone policy for schools. This has been discussed in the Iowa Senate and District 26 Senator Kara Warme talks about the bill.
Warme has daughters of her own currently going to middle and high school. She says that many schools have a policy in place
The idea is to give a minimum level of policy but allow the schools to still adopt the best policy for themselves.
There may be exceptions made for logical reasons, like a student monitoring their diabetes. Warme calls the cell phone problem in schools a public health emergency
The minimum threshold for this bill is to remove cell phones from instructional time, but allows schools to go further if they want. A handful of schools went to a no phone policy at the beginning of this school year.
