Marshalltown, IA—After scoring just seven runs in the team’s previous four games, the Marshalltown Community College baseball team erupted for 11 runs, but the production was not enough as the Tigers fell at Shawn Williams Field to Southeastern Community College 20-11. Tuesday’s slugfest provided a total of 33 hits.
The offense put on a show early for the Tigers on Tuesday, but the bats cooled off down the stretch while the Blackhawks continued to click at the plate. Leading 9-7 after four innings, MCC was outscored 13-2 over the final five frames to drop the cross-division matchup.
Luis Duran (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Centro de Estudio Espaillat) went 4-6 at the plate for his second four-hit game of the season. The sophomore drove in three runs on a second inning triple. Freshman Marving Serrano (Caracas, Venezuela/Ciudad Fajardo de Guatire) produced one of his best games as a Tiger, going 3-4 with a career-high four RBI. Jose Mieses (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Prepara) added two hits and scored three runs from the leadoff spot.
Mieses scored the team’s first run in the opening inning to cut Southeastern’s early lead in half. Duran’s triple to deep right-center was part of a four-run second inning to put MCC on top 5-2. Southeastern answered with three runs in the third, but a solo home run from Joel Rosauer (Elk Run Heights, IA/Waterloo East), his first of the year, regained the lead for the home team in the bottom half.
The fourth inning saw a pair of runs from the Blackhawks only to be upped by the Tigers with three runs. Serrano and Tony Salato (Knoxville, IA/Knoxville) delivered RBI-singles to take a 9-7 lead. The runs disappeared over the next three innings for MCC as Southeastern put up nine runs, including a seven-run sixth.
Serrano scored a run in the eighth and added an RBI-single in the ninth as the Tigers threatened late but failed to overcome the large deficit.
The bullpen efforts of Brett Braida (Chariton, IA/Chariton), Adam Kerkove (North English, IA/English Valleys), and Duncan Snider (Muscatine, IA/Muscatine) combined to slow the Blackhawk offense late, allowing just two earned runs over the final 3.2 innings.
The Tigers head to Ellsworth Community College for a nine inning game at 3:00 PM on Thursday before returning home for a four-game Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) series on Saturday and Sunday with Southwestern Community College.
