On January 26, 2020, at 10:47 p.m., the Ames Police Department received a report of a person
with a gun at McDonald’s at 129 S. Duff Avenue. When officers arrived, they found damage to
a window, which was consistent with the discharge of a firearm. According to the victims and a
witness, the suspect, whom was known to one of the victims, entered McDonald’s and then left
a short time later. The suspect got into a red car and parked near the customer seating area. The
suspect displayed a shotgun and fired one round towards a male and female inside McDonald’s.
The suspect fled the area in the red car and was last seen southbound on S. Sherman Avenue.
The victims were not injured.
The suspect in the shooting has been identified as Demarcus T. Stokes, age 20, of Cedar Rapids.
An arrest warrant has been issued for the following offense:
Attempted Murder, a class “B” felony
The red car was recovered this morning in rural Story County. Stokes may be traveling in a gray
2001 Chevrolet Suburban, bearing Iowa license plate GNP480. Stokes should be considered
armed and dangerous.
