Grandparents to Captains, the scammers continue to try and separate you from your money.
Marshalltown PD says two different scams have popped up in the area. One is the grandparent scam, where the phone rings, and the caller pretends to be a grandchild who has been jailed, sick or even in a foreign company. The caller sounds petty convincing and then asks for money…but don’t tell anyone.
The other scam involves a call from someone identifying as Captain Brian Batterson of the Marshalltown Police, asking for a call back to a bogus number in the 319 area code. There really is a Captain Batterson, but he is, as the PD says, safely isolated in his COVID-19 bunker and does not have a 319 area code. The caller may also use the name Scott Johnson.
As always, if anyone calls trying to get your personal info, and be cautious if you have even a sneakin’ suspicion that something doesn’t seem right…and then hang up.
