It’s not like they ever left, but the scammers are at it again via a telephone near you.

The Story County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports of the ole Social Security scam. That’s when a caller tells you action has been filed against you and threatens legal action unless you return a call. If you call back, they ask for personal info, like a social security number.

Marshalltown Police say it’s the grandparent scam. The caller tells elderly folks that their grandchild is in jail and needs money.

Another tip-off is if the caller tells you not to tell anyone else about the call you just got.

In those examples or any other calls that request personal information, don’t panic and don’t give out any info.
