While the Lincoln Highway, which runs coast to coast right through central Iowa has been around for over 100 years, the designation of the Iowa Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway is turning 15 this year. Jan Gammon, the byway’s coordinator for Prairie Rivers of Iowa, says the 460-mile route is joined by Nebraska and Illinois as a byway running through those states…and you can’t miss it in Iowa, thanks to the signage on the highway put up by the DOT.
Gammon says the Lincoln Highway added another feather in its cap in February when it was named a National Scenic Byway. The only other such designation in the state is the Loess Hill Scenic Byway.
