Marshall, Story and Boone counties will be the focus of a 16-million dollar research project at Iowa State on the use of wireless to provide internet access in rural areas.
Margaret Martonosi of the National Science Foundation says it’s the fourth project the foundation has launched in the U-S, in partnership with more than 30 wireless companies and associations.
She says that includes telemedicine, self-driving vehicles and other internet-based activities that are often out of reach in rural areas where connectivity is lacking. The Meskwaki tribal nation, Collins Aerospace and John Deere will also be involved.
