An alarm system alerted residents and firefighters and a sprinkler system did its job during an apartment fire in Ames yesterday.
Ames Fire called to the 600 block of S. 17th Street where a second-story apartment was on fire. The sprinkler system limited the damage and all occupants of the building got out safely. The firefighters did rescue two cats from the apartment.
The fire was caused by an unattended candle, with damage estimated at $20,000.
