Severe storms on Saturday led to at least seven deaths and extensive damage across a wide area of central Iowa.  The greatest extent of damage was reported in the Winterset area and Madison County southwest of Des Moines, where six people died after a massive tornado roared through the area.

A confirmed storm related fatality was also reported in Lucas County within the city limits of Chariton in south central Iowa on Saturday, as well.

Major storm damage was also reported in the community of Norwalk, which lies just south of the Des Moines metro area in Warren County.

In Marshall County, there were no confirmed tornadoes or immediate storm related damage reported within the county, according to Emergency Management Coordinator Kim Elder.

However, a conformed tornado did touch down in nearby Poweshiek County between Gilman and Newburg, which eventually made its way into Tama County.

In Tama County, two mobile homes near Tama sustained major damage from the storm, but no injuries were reported.

Residents in Tama and Chelsea also reported power outages that lasted several hours into the evening on Saturday.
