An Ames 3rd grader recently submitted a letter to the city of Ames asking for an audio crosswalk to be installed at a busy street intersection in the community to benefit his father, who is legally blind. Ben Smith, a 3rd grade student at Edwards Elementary School, noted concerns with his father, Brad, who walks to school to pick up his son every day. In the letter, Ben Smith noted that the intersection of Mortenson Road & South Dakota Avenue does not have an audio crosswalk to notify users when the light changes & how much time they have to cross. He mailed his letter on February 10th with the city responding the following day. Earlier this week, Ben, his father & occupational therapist Rachel Barnette, each met at the intersection near Edwards Elementary to test a newly installed audio crosswalk. Ames Traffic Supervisor Brad Becker said the new audio crosswalks still have a few bugs that need to the ironed out, but is a notable improvement when it comes to improving pedestrian safety.
