Avid supporters of the “Tama County Against Turbines” organizations turned out at Monday’s Tama County Supervisors meeting with a request that the county board implement a moratorium on any new industrial wind project approval, until the county updates its current ordinance, which was first created in 1998, and re-approved by county officials in 2010.

To date, more than 500 people have signed a petition calling on Tama County officials to update ordinances governing the zoning of industrial wind projects to better protect public health, safety, wildlife, and land.

Depending on the height and size of turbines used and amount of land easements local property owners may sign, if approved, the proposed Winding Star wind project could include 50-70 turbines, according to the developer.

Supervisors declined to take a vote, or go on record to support a moratorium at Monday’s meeting, despite numerous requests from those in attendance to consider doing so.
