An Ames man has been found guilty by a Story County Jury of First-Degree Murder in the death of a woman at an Ames apartment complex in August of 2021.

On Wednesday, 27-year-old Oscar Chavez of Ames was found guilty of murdering 32-year-old Maria Hanian at an apartment in the west part of Ames on August 19th of 2021.

According to prosecutors, Chavez assaulted Hanian and then shot her several times.

Investigators say security cameras at the apartment complex showed Chavez leaving the scene at the time of the murder.

Chavez is scheduled to be sentenced on August 1st.

He faces life in prison.
