During the winter and especially the holidays house fires become more common.  The lights, candles, and all the decorations look pretty but can cause issues.  Fire Chief Dave Rierson joined KFJB to give us tips abouts about fire safety in the winter and holiday season.  He first gives a tip for live Christmas trees

Make sure you’re checking that tree stand daily as well, keeping it full of water.  A dry tree is more likely to catch fire.  Lights are a common place for fires to start, the heat from them can cause a dry tree to catch fire, especially non-LED bulbs.

Another warning he mentions is putting extension cords together, do your best to use 1 extension cord and plug it directly into an outlet.  Candles are another fire starter and more common around the holiday and winter.

Keep in mind all of the greenery around your house and make sure that the greenery isn’t near any heat source.  Space heaters and fire places need at least 3 feet of space so nothing catches fire.
